What is a good product or good way to get rid of the fleas out in my yard?

I never had a problem with fleas when we lived in El Paso, Tx. but now we live in Killeen, Tx. where it is greener and rains more and my dogs have fleas. I am taking them to the vet to get dipped and get the monthly flea stuff that goes on their back. But they are still outside and I have 39 freaking flea bites on my legs just from working in the yard the other day! And I know they are flea bites cuz a pharmacist and my doctor told me they were. What products are good for fleas outside, like to spray on the grass, or should I call an exterminator?

Hi there… you would have to contact a pest control company to treat the outdoor environment with a flea pesticide according to the Texas Agricultural Extension Service Texas A&M article: http://insects.tamu.edu/extension/bulletins/l-1738.html

Organic Gardening Pest Control—Top 5 Tips to Protect Fruits against Pests

So you have luscious fruit growing on your fruit trees and are looking forward to having a good crop. But you seem to be worried? Is it the thought of keeping Aphids, fruit flies and coddling moths at bay that is giving you sleepless nights? Sure these thoughts must be troubling you as they do every gardener, having an orchard. The surest and simplest cure for your troubles lies in organic gardening pest control, which is nothing but a bunch of healthy recipes to keep pests under control.

These organic gardening pest control solutions are easily available, extremely beneficial and easy to prepare as these employ things that we commonly use in our daily routine. Being organic in nature these are extremely beneficial for the fruit trees and can in no way harm them like the synthetic pest control remedies often tend to do.

  1. Baits and Horticultural Oil – Coddling moths are best tackled with the help of sticky traps and corrugated cardboard. If facing this problem, you can use pheromone baits. Horticultural oil can be sprayed on the leaves of fruit trees for dealing with their larvae. This also proves beneficial in dealing with thrips, which are another common pest bothering fruit trees.
  1. Organic Soap Solution – Sprayed in the evenings, this is another way to tackle the annoying thrips and spider mites that infest the fruit trees during late summer season. Apart from this one can also spay neem oil, which again works wonders.
  1. Natural Predators – Aphids are best tackled when left to the mercy of natural predators. Make sure that you have plenty of these around to help you deal with this problem. Lacewings and lady bugs are some of the good natural predators that can help fruit farmers.
  1. Borers are another variety of pests that attack fruit trees. To protect your trees from their onslaught it is advisable to cover up their trunk. However, if they have already been infected, which would be evident from tell-tale signs as wilted stems and stiff bark, inject the stems with nematodes. This helps kill the remaining larvae. It is advisable to pull off the badly affected stems.
  1. Oriental fruit moths are another nuisance that fruit growers often face. To expose their larvae and deal with them it is advisable to till the soil around the affected trees.

The best way to protect your fruit trees from pests is to do it organically. You’ll be surprised with the results.

Who is responsible for pest control? The landlord or tennant?

We have discovered a hugh wasp nest in our garden. We only moved in a couple of months ago (we’re renting through an estate agents) so we don’t know if it’s recently appeared or if it’s been here since we moved in. Who is responsible for paying for the expermination?
thanks
Thanks for your response Wilfred!
To the other “helpful” poster – is there any need to be quite so rude? It’s not about being cheap, it’s about finding out where the responsibility lies!! If you can’t say anything helpful, why bother!

Dallas Texas Lawn Care – Know The Basics

Dallas TX lawn care does not have to control your life. With proper maintenance, your lawn can be beautiful without taking up too much time. One thing that you need to watch for is any sign of disease or infestation. Diseases and pests can quickly overtake grass so knowing the warning signs is essential. Early treatment is always the best way to go. Diseases and pests can affect the leaves of a plant or the roots and each will have different symptoms. The most common problems are nematodes, Brown Patch, Gray Leaf Spot and Take-All Root Rot.

The first sign that your lawn may be infested with nematodes is yellowing turf and wilting grass. Weeds or bare patches may appear on your lawn also. The easiest way to know if this is your problem is to have the soil tested. Any Dallas TX lawn care specialist can do this or you may wish to check with your county extension office. To avoid having your lawn infested, don’t overwater and limit nitrogen fertilizers. Watering less frequently at deeper levels, along with proper fertilization, allows for better root growth. Shallow roots encourage dense populations of nematodes. A deep, strong root system is more resistant to this type of pest.

Leaf diseases include Brown Patch and Gray Leaf Spot. Brown Patch commonly starts as a small spot and quickly spreads in a horseshoe or circular pattern. It is a fungal disease that is quite common in areas of high humidity, especially during the cooler months. Gray Leaf Spot appears as spots on the leaves. These spots start out round, then gradually take on an oval shape before spreading down the blade. Avoid overfertilizing with nitrogen and take care when watering. You do not want grass to remain wet as this can lead to the disease. With either disease, fungicides can often help to control the problem and can be obtained at any Dallas TX lawn care center.

A common disease that may affect the roots of your lawn is Take-All Root Rot. You may not realize there is a problem until the disease has progressed significantly. The first sign you may see is patches of yellow turf which will most likely occur during the cooler months, yet can carry over into warmer periods. In order to prevent this from happening to your lawn, ensure your lawn has proper draining and don’t water for short periods of time. Allow water to drench the lawn a few times a week as this promotes good root growth. Also, don’t overdo it with nitrogen fertilizer as this leads to excess top growth which encourages this disease. Dallas TX lawn care can be very easy if you know what to do and what not to do.
