Organic Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

Written by admin on . Posted in Gardening

Mary Hanna asked:

To be successful at organic vegetable gardening you must draw up detailed plans. The soil is your first consideration; how to make it rich and fertile, and how to prepare it so harmful pests won’t attack your vegetable garden. The two ways that organic vegetable gardening differs from conventional gardens is the usage of fertilizer and how to keep pests under control. Phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium are the three components essential to your organic garden.

For lush, green foliage you must have nitrogen. For strong roots and stems phosphorus is needed. And for the important protection from disease and brief cold snaps, potassium is a must. Let’s call them the big three. The big three are available in commercial fertilizers however they are synthetic. In organic vegetable gardening the big three are added in a much different way.

The best way of enriching your soil is by compost. Dig some pits in your back yard to start your compost from kitchen refuse. Use things like pine needles, corn stalks, leaves, carrot tops, fruits or vegetables that have spoiled, manure, egg shells and coffee grinds. Some organic gardeners use weeds in their compost but I do not recommend this for obvious reasons. As the compost materials decompose they release bacteria and fungi into the soil that you are preparing. The bacteria and fungi convert nutrients like nitrogen to ammonia and nitrates that will be usable for your vegetables. Use substances such as seaweed, potash salts, tobacco stems and wood ash to help make potassium in your compost. By making your own compost, you are controlling the mixture and balance to achieve the right combination for your organic vegetable garden.

To be absolutely sure that your compost has completely broken down and is now offering up the right balance, start working it into the soil at least two weeks before you plan on planting.

The pH in the soil must be right for healthy plants. Test your soil, if it has a ph of 0 it is very acidic, while a 14 is extreme alkaline. Of course a seven indicates neutral soil. To raise the pH of the soil inexpensively use ground limestone. An additional benefit of the limestone is that it contains magnesium something that most soils lack. If, on the other hand, you have extreme alkaline soil use sulpher to bring the pH down.

Pest control in organic vegetable gardening is also different that conventional gardening. In many conventional beds gardeners wish to eradicate all pests with pesticides. Many in organic gardening only wish to keep the pest population down so to have a balance in the garden. Obviously, whenever possible, plant pest resistant vegetables. In order for harmful organisms to grow, they need bright sunlight so keep thick mulch around the plants to deny the organisms that needed sunlight and to help hold moisture into the ground. If you find you have a heavy infestation here is a natural pest control formula:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

Follow this tips and you are on your way to raising a healthy and plentiful organic vegetable garden.

Happy Gardening!

Pest Control Software Quickbooks

Extending the Capabilities of QuickBooks

As much as I like QuickBooks as a software, in my line of work as Intuit Solution Provider, I frequently see limitations in QuickBooks. So I keep my eyes open for products that I think would be beneficial for some of my clients. When I’m looking for a solution, I want good integration with QuickBooks, preferably easy to setup and use, and reasonably priced. That narrows the field! I also limit my list to just a few programs so that I can be more familiar with them and more helpful to my clients.

When I first heard about Method Integration, I said – I don’t get it. What’s a portal? A few months later I attended another webinar about the product with some very concrete QuickBooks examples. This time, I saw the light and came away very excited about how it could expand QuickBooks’ capability, how easily, and how reasonably. So, I spent time to learn the program in more depth and certified. Method address several different areas of shortcomings in QuickBooks yet you’re paying for just one solution and can customize it to suit your unique business.

Here are just a few ways Method can work with QuickBooks:

  • You can have real-time sync – without having to manually click on sync, or File, Import, or anything other than save the entry.
  • You can access your QuickBooks remotely – and your QuickBooks data file doesn’t have to be open.
  • You can have multiple users in QuickBooks but you don’t need a QuickBooks license for each user; in fact you can have more than a few hundred users in QuickBooks Pro with Method.
  • You can have more Custom Fields using Method than you can in QuickBooks. And, you can use Custom Fields in Method where QuickBooks doesn’t have any. An example is custom fields for Bills from Vendors.
  • You can rename fields. For instance, you can call Customers “Clients” or rename Classes to Departments.
  • You can customize data entry screens in ways you can’t in QuickBooks.
  • You can control access so much better. In fact, you can even restrict their access to just a few specific transactions. And, this keeps users out of your actual QuickBooks data file
  • If you have a Mac user and a PC user, both access the same data file.
  • Method has a better audit trail; you can track who made changes to lists, such as Customers, Vendors, Items.
  • You can create drop-down lists, to either make data entry easier or to keep users out of other areas. E.g. you can provide a drop down list for a sales rep of only their customers instead of having access to the entire list.

There are three different levels of Method – remote, CRM and full-blown. Remote Access is the basic level. At this level, you can access QuickBooks, set up custom fields, customize the data entry screens, and limit access.

The next level up is Method CRM(Customer Relation Management) – you get all the basic features of remote but the additional features of a CRM package. Method CRM has two aspects: sales management and case management.

1. For sales management, Method lets you track marketing campaigns, opportunities and various sales activities. You can maintain your list of contacts right inside of Method but keep them out of QuickBooks until they become a customer or client – and you don’t need to reenter any kind of contact information for QuickBooks. Method CRM also integrates with Outlook including e-mails and scheduling appointments and events. From a manager’s viewpoint, they can view a dashboard and analytics on prospects, customers and staff.

2. Some businesses need to track various technical or support issues with customers. With Method CRM, the billing can be created in Method (and sent to QuickBooks), but the specific issues, who was assigned to the case, status, priority, and comments are all maintained in Method. Again, the dashboard and analytics can help identify problem areas as well as successful resolutions.

In the full-blown level, in addition to Remote access and Method CRM, you get industry specific applications and a free form database. Two industry applications that come at this level are Method Warehouse and Method Field Services. As more are developed, you automatically get them – no extra fees.

Method Warehouse addresses some of the weak inventory areas in QuickBooks and includes the following features (this is the short list – there are more):

  • You can track multiple inventory locations.
  • You have automated bin creation and tracking.
  • You can have serial numbers
  • You can set alerts for critical levels of inventory.
  • Automated transfers can be set to LIFO (Last In First Out), FIFO (First In First Out) or FEFO (First Expires First Out).

Field service businesses may include pest control, HVAC, plumbing and electrical to name just a few. Method Field Services’ features include:

  • Schedule one-time or recurring services.
  • Schedule by time of day or route order.
  • Work orders can span many days and cross over midnight.
  • Print, email and customize work orders and route list.
  • Turn work orders into QuickBooks invoices. Invoice one work order at a time or as a batch for a selected date range.
  • Group according to crew divisions or tech skill sets.
  • Track Customer equipment and serial numbers.

As a free-form database on the web, Method is already integrated with QuickBooks. For those who have done any programming, like in Microsoft Access, you will know and appreciate these features. You can:

  • Add an unlimited number of tables and fields.
  • Create and customize data entry forms based on custom or pre-built tables and fields.
  • Create actions that affect what happens in the software.

So let me give you some examples of how this might work for you. It was in seeing examples that really made me fully appreciate just all that Method can do with QuickBooks.

  • You could have a sales rep log into Method and see only their customers or the contacts in their territory.
  • You can have invoices put on hold until a supervisor reviews them before going into QuickBooks.
  • You can create pop-up messages for users – this could be instructions or notify the user that they did not fill in a required field, or a welcome message.
  • You could create a time entry screen that would have a calendar where they could choose to date a timer that they could start and stop as they work on a project.
  • When a user clicks a button, you can determine where they go next by the command underlying the button.
  • Sometimes, when customizing invoices, you need to have certain information for your customer and can’t achieve that through the normal QuickBooks invoice screen. With Method you could have additional fields and additional calculations and put this information where you want on the invoice.
  • You can have your clients login to a screen you customized for them. They might be able to enter issues that they are having or view payment records with you.

I like to customize to suit my purposes, but must admit, that programming isn’t for me. There’s so much you can do with Method without programming. But, should you need the extra power, there are resources that can do the programming for you or perhaps you have staff that could do this.

Method also offers three different fee structures depending on if you want concurrent users, named users, or have users who need only a few minutes a day or month; this means you can tailor the fee to suit your needs. I haven’t seen this with other software packages out there. Method also offers a free trial, so you can see how it could work in your situation. So check it out!

Exterminator Cost

exterminator cost
Mr Kitty – Best Local Exterminator in Placerville, CA

How much does it cost for an exterminator? it’s for mice.?

My mother is giving me her old house and it is infested with mice. They are living in the cupboards, the stove, they are in all the closets, and everywhere else they can hide! I would like to know how much this would cost to do myself or If doing it myself would be a bad idea?

Completely up to you. How much time, or money do you want to spend? T

raps are about $ .50, and can be reused for years. A pound of bacon is about $3.00 and won’t get moldy until LONG after you’re done, and a jar of peanut butter, at Aldi’s, is $1.50.

Place the traps where you see droppings, and next to the walls. Smear a small amount on peanut butter in the “hook” of the trap and stick a tiny piece of bacon into the peanut butter.

Or use your phone and call an exterminator. DON’T call the nationally advertised ones. Local guys will be FAR cheaper, and you’re supporting a neighbor.

I owned a home with the same problem. Over a period of 3 days I caught about 50 mice with 3 traps.

When you get done, by whichever method you choose, be sure to seal ALL the possible openings you find, or you’ll be doing the same thing next year.

How To Choose The Right Exterminator

Rodents, bugs, ants and other insects can bother you and your family at any time. It makes you feel annoyed even just the thought of it. But be glad to have companies and people to help you get rid of those pests. The only question is that are you choosing the right pest control expert? Perhaps, your answer will be no. Then don’t get worried because this page will give you tips on how to find the right pest exterminator.

The most basic initial step you must do is to make a personal and a little intensive research. Try to do your own investigation toward the goal of finding the best pest control company. A good exterminator for pests is determined through comparison. So, get your local phone directory or browse listings on the internet and start looking for a potential exterminator.

Included in your research is to have guidelines. The first one you must consider is the safety of your children and pets. Be reminded that some companies use chemical related solutions which may eventually harm humans and animals. Find a company that applies environmentally friendly methods in getting rid of pests.

Another consideration is to check the background and history of the company. Ensure that they run a legal business. That means they are following rules and regulations issued by the local government. See to it if there workers are licensed. Professionalism must be visibly seen in a company.

Guaranteed services and affordable pricing are other important things you must look in a pest control company. Most exterminators are considered reputable if they have these important attributes. You must be satisfied of their works and at the same time with the costs they charge you.

These are the simple ways to choose the best exterminator. Find that right pest control company through the tips provided above. And you will definitely get a good, satisfying result. So, don’t’ do other things but to follow these tips.

bed bugs landlord issue in san antonio texas help?

i found bedbugs in new apt which i moved 4 months ago.i asked for pest control.they came and confirmed that we had them.next day we get a notice to vacate the apt and its a lease violation because we are vacating before the lease contract.they are asking us to pay around $1500 for the damages and re letting fee. they are blaming us and telling us that we brought them from our country. there are about 10 apts in complex which are being vacated for the same reason. can we go to court to fight against the management. where can i find the regulations for pest control and laws for pest control in texas. is the complex problem and individual tenents problem.help me..

Get a lawyer.

Read that lease very carefully. Does it include verbage that pest problems void the lease?

While it might be a tenent who brought the bed bugs into the apartment, it seems rather strange that 10 apartments all brought bed bugs in. Kinda looks like the apartment complex is more to blame.

The Importance of a Healthy and Clean Environment

Everyone wants to stay healthy and no one wishes to get sick at all times: that is why you too do everything to make sure that the environment you live in is clean, by sanitizing and sterilizing the things that you use on a daily basis and defending your home from pests.  However, many people out there choose to spend a fortune in buying different solutions to ensure that they achieve such results.

Illness-free

Living in a home that is clean means that you and your family members are very likely to be free from unwanted illnesses, because, believe it or not, dirt is what attracts pests, which are responsible for causing many diseases.  In fact, if your environment is unkempt, different bugs and mosquitoes may thrive in it.  Mosquitoes are great bearers of sickness: just think that some of them are so dangerous that they have taken millions of lives worldwide.

However, if you are going to thoroughly clean your environment – even the hidden parts and corners of the house, you are assured that those unwanted bugs will not harm or put your family’s health at risk.

Relieves you from emotional stress

Let’s face it, you feel worried even when a casual friend of yours is sick. They may pass their illness to you, or to one of your family members. But how much burden to your emotions it would be if the person involved is one of your children, a relative or a close friend?  It will surely stress you out emotionally.  Now remember that emotions play a big role in the entire human system.  Emotional stress leads to anxiety, then to depression.  Later on, you may lose your appetite, sleeplessness, restlessness and the list goes on.  Having an ill member of the family creates a domino effect.  On the other hand, you can definitely prevent this from happening.  You just have to keep your environment clean.

Saves you from financial burden

With the unpredictable status of the economy these days, the last thing you want to be doing is to spend a hundred bucks in medicines and hospitalization.  In fact, not everybody has the privilege of being covered by medical insurance.  But also in that case medicines would cost so much you’d have to pay for them yourself. Well just think that you can save more and spend your money in other things if you just keep your surroundings cleansed and sanitized.

Time is gold

Money can be replaced and health can be restored in most cases. But what with time? You are familiar with the phrase, “Time lost is time wasted”.  It is so true.  When you get sick, you spend time resting because you have no energy to do your work.  The hardest part is that time can never be replaced and restored anymore.  Make full use of your time in things productive.  Clean your environment and maintain it that way.

Another wise quote is, “Prevention is better than cure”.  By keeping your environment clean and healthy at all times you have just saved your own life and that of the people around you.
