Stink Bug Control

If you live in Lancaster or York PA, New Jersey, or even Maryland, you might stink–with a Stink Bug in your house of course!  True to their name, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug has arrived, and making no apologies.  Imported from Asia, they have spread all over, including 28 counties in Pennsylvania.  The Stink Bug is a fasinating bug in more ways than one.  No other pest we have seen has the ability to come down chimneys, or enter homes as demonstrated in  the video on stink bugs (http://www.dominionpestcontrol.com/category/pest-information/) shows them, coming directly in through the air conditioner!

It has taken many months of aggravation for folks to be motivated to resolve their stink bug issue.  One reason is due to the natural optimism that we share as Americans.  You know, ignore it long enough, and it might go away…not so here.  These bugs are here to stay and they are moving in–no joke.  In fact, we call it in pest control, “over-wintering”.  This is true for only certian species of insects.  They will do their best to get in the walls in the fall to “spend the winter”.  However, once your heat kicks on, the stink bugs think it is summer inside your home.  Confused, they emerge anywhere.  Now, it would not be a problem if it were just one every now and then, but when you here them buzzing in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep, one gets weary.

“Okay”, you say, “What can I do?”  Well, let’s talk about non-pesticide control first.  The number one way to mechanically stop them is to seal-up any cracks or crevices around the home, especially where the services run in or out such as the dryer vent, electric line, outside faucet, etc.  Make sure the caulk is tight on all these.  Now, if you still see stink bugs, they may still be emerging from the walls because they are stuck.  If this is the case, a pest control company can only put a “band-aid” on the issue.  The real answer is prevention.  You need to stop the “buggers” before they get into the walls, at which point they become “stinkers”.  The best way to stop them before they get into your walls, is to powerspray the perimeter at least once every quarter. Powespraying is the only way to stop stink bugs is you have more than a one-story home or business.  Don’t be afraid, they can be stopped…you just got to know who to call–a pest control company that will powerspray (not all will).  If a company is not more aggressive than you are about your pest issue, find another.  Whatever you do , don’t fall for the line that there is nothing you can do about them.  You may not be able to stop them from flying to your house, but you can keep them dying at the door.
